It’s that time of year again when we start to see nativity scenes popping up all around us. This timeless tradition is such an important part of the holidays and holds special memories for each of us.
But there are many things that people do not know about nativity scenes, that not only speak to why they’re so special, but also, make us appreciate them even more.
Where “nativity” comes from
Nativity stems from the Latin word nativus, which translates to “born.”
And that makes sense, right? Nativities are scenes of Jesus Christ being born, alongside Mary, Joseph, and the Three Kings. Altogether it’s a symbol of birth.
Ever wonder where the first Nativity scene came from?
Well, legend has it that it was St. Francis of Assisi, the namesake of the Franciscan Friars, back in the year 1223. Yet instead, he created a scene with real live animals and people, to show the public that Christmas was about Christ, not gift-gifting.
People have been replicating his ever since.
The largest Nativity scene in the world
According to the Guinness World Book of Records, the largest scene can be found in the Czech Republic.
Adding your own design
Across the world, people have been designing their own Nativity scenes for close to a millennium. As a result, new and various styles have arisen, namely ones with willow tree figurines.
At K. Kannon Co. we offer a number of willow tree angels and figurines that would be perfect alongside Christ in the manger.
