Why Do Willow Tree Figurines Not Have Faces?

Happiness Angel Willow TreeKannon Company is known for Willow Tree figurines, which offer messages of hope and love to both celebrate and commemorate special occasions. People love to get these figurines as gifts. They’re wrapped in a custom package, complete with a unique message to add a personal touch to these charming keepsakes.

Interestingly, Willow Tree figurines don’t have faces. Did you ever wonder why?

Back in the year 2000, artist Susan Lordi created Willow Tree. Her creations were meant to represent feelings– the kind that would make people feel closer to each other, and, if possible, to heal wounds between them. Ultimately, these figurines’ purpose was (and is) to help build relationships.

Through her artistic creations, Willow Tree pieces are able to express feelings through simple-yet-elegant body gestures– and no faces.

In order for the person looking at a figurine to become more of a participant in what’s happening with the piece of art, Lordi decided to not have faces on her figurines. This way, the giver and receiver can envision what or whom they want. By having faceless figurines, all are welcome to imagine themselves or their loved ones being represented by the figurines. It doesn’t matter if you have a big nose, small lips, a bad complexion, or whatever– by keeping the figurines so simple– and faceless–they have the ability to appeal to everybody and represent everybody.

With art, people bring their own values, ideas and more to each piece, right? You judge something based on all that you know, as well as your hopes, fears, desires, etc. Willow Tree figurines aren’t so much about a particular person– they’re more about expressing emotions and feelings. In the end, they become more personal and meaningful because they don’t have specific faces and facial expressions!
