What is Holy Week?

In Christianity, the week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday is known as Holy Week. It is one of the most important and sacred weeks of the year. Here’s a breakdown of all of the holidays that occur during Holy Week.

Palm SundayWhat is Holy Week?

Also known as “Passion Sunday” in some denominations, Palm Sunday is the day Jesus entered Jerusalem. Crowds shouted their praises and waved palm branches (hence the “palm” in “Palm Sunday”) as he rode into the city.

Holy Monday

This observes the anointing of Jesus at Bethany. However, in the Bible, this event is said to have occurred before Palm Sunday. Holy Monday could also mark the day of the cursing of the fig tree, where Jesus curses a fig tree for being barren, or the cleansing of the temple, where Jesus expels merchants from Herod’s Temple.

Holy Tuesday

The Tuesday before Easter marks Jesus’ predictions of his own death.

Spy Wednesday

This is the day Judas arranged for his betrayal of Jesus with the high priests. Fittingly, this day is called “Spy” Wednesday.

Maundy Thursday

Also known as “Holy Thursday,” this is the day of the Last Supper when Jesus predicted the events that would occur in the following days.

Good Friday

In spite of the name “Good,” this day commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. Most masses are solemn and mournful, and in some countries, processions are held with statues representing the Passion of Christ.

Holy Saturday

“Black Saturday” is another name for the day between Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. There usually aren’t any masses or commemorations on this day, although traditionally, sundown on Holy Saturday was considered the beginning of Easter Vigil.

Easter

While Easter is not technically a part of Holy Week, it is what Holy Week leads up to. This is, of course, the day we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.

Easter and Holy Week are one of the most important times of the year. Commemorate this time with one of our willow tree angel figurines for a friend or family member.
